The current F-150 was only revised recently but Ford is already testing an upgraded version of the model. The testing mule of the 2018 Ford F-150 was captured on the streets of Michigan with camouflage on the front and rear fascias which means they will be revised. In addition, we believe the mule has a diesel powerplant under its hood, which confirms rumors about the automaker’s plans to hook up the F-150 with a diesel mill. From the testing mule, Ford seems to have modified the F-150 to look more like the bigger Super Duty truck. Read long for more information.
2018 Ford F-150 Exterior
As said earlier, the testing mule is covered only on the front fascia and the rear fascias. Other parts remain similar to the outgoing model. The grille looks more like that of the bigger Super Duty trucks. It will likely feature a two-bar design. The model’s bumper and headlights will also likely be adopted from the Super Duty. The hood is smoother than that of the current model.
On the rear, the model appears to have a revised exhaust pipe. The pipe is bigger compared to that on the current model. It also features additional cutouts that apply the Venturi effect to cool the temperature of the exhaust gas. This system is adopted from the Super Duty truck, which uses a diesel mill. This is another indication that the automaker is testing a diesel-powered F-150. The tailgate also looks to have been upgraded. It has an additional handle as well as a visible crease.
2018 Ford F-150 Interior
Our spy photographers did not manage to get photos of the prototype’s cabin. In addition, the heavy tint on the windows means it is impossible to see how the truck looks inside. I expect Ford to update the interior of the truck. Ford will likely make the truck’s cabin more premium. Most likely, the automaker will add an infotainment system, a climate control system as well as connectivity features such as USB plugs, Bluetooth connectivity and Smartphone integration.
On lower trims, Ford may use cloth upholstery and leather on top trims. Expect the model to feature more driving aids as the automaker strives to improve the safety of the truck.
Engine Specs and performance
The biggest news is under the hood where all indications point to a new diesel mill. For sure, we do not know the actual engine Ford is testing. However, all things point to a turbocharged 3.0 L, V-6 that is rated at 254 horses and 443 lb-ft of torque. This engine is borrowed from the current Range Rover Sport. According to credible reports, the engine will be mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox channeling the juice to all four wheels. The 10-speed transmission system will be an upgrade since on the Range Rover it uses an 8-speed system. This engine will greatly improve the fuel economy ratings of the truck.
The 2018 F-150 will also get a 3.5 L, EcoBoost V-6 that will also be paired to the 10-speed automatic gearbox. This engine produces 370 hp and 435 lb-ft of torque. I understand that this system is jointly developed with General Motors who will use it on the upcoming Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.
Other mills powering the current model will also be retained. The mills will, however, be updated to offer more power and enhanced fuel economy.
Price and release date
It is too early to expect Ford to avail details of the 2018 Ford F-150, as the automaker is yet to even confirm or deny reports that the F-150 will get a diesel mill. However, I believe the mill will not push the prices of the model overmuch. Since other features carry over largely unchanged, I expect the price to change slightly.
