2017 Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew

When Ford released the Raptor SuperCab version last year, many enthusiasts were awed but left wondering when the automaker would debut a SuperCrew version. Well, the wait is finally over. Finally, the Blue Oval automaker has unveiled the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew version with most elements of the popular SuperCab.

Unlike the SuperCab, the SuperCrew comes with full-size rear doors which mean it has a better legroom at the rear. Now your friends or family members seated at the rear won’t complain when you gallop through the desert like a wild stallion.

The SuperCrew is almost identical to the SuperCab which in turn borrows its design language from the 2015 F-150.  Ideally, the difference between the SuperCab and the SuperCrew is the full-size rear doors that indicate that it has an expanded cabin. To increase the cabin size, Ford extended the wheelbase by 12 inches to 145 inches compared with the SuperCab. The rear doors are front-hinged to allow easier access to the rear seats compared to the SuperCab which features rear-hinged rear access panels.

The new model is also 6 inches wider than the outgoing model which makes it more stable while navigating the rough terrains. Both the front and rear bumpers are raised giving the vehicle impressive approach and departure angles. The truck has also been fitted with LED headlights and taillights to increase visibility in the desert and other terrains that the truck will pass through.

Well, we all know that, to go through a desert and come out unscathed, you need a special  set of “foot wear”,  similarly, the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew rides on 17-inch beadlock-compatible wheels wrapped in All-Terrain TA KO2 tires. These tires are specially designed to track loose sand, avoid chunking on rocky terrain as well as self-clean.

On the sides, the model still features fender flares while at the rear, the model is identical to the F-150 truck. However, the SuperCrew adds a huge FORD lettering which runs from the left to the right side. The automaker has also added new dual exhaust tips that complete its intimidating look. The rear also features a receiver hitch with 2 recovery points.

Sliding into the new cabin, you will immediately notice the huge rear space which provides plenty of legroom for rear passengers. This was achieved by expanding the wheelbase by a whole foot. Now your friends will be more relaxed as you navigate through the uneven terrains. All other features are similar to the SuperCab version.

Engine Specs and performance

Many enthusiasts will be saddened to learn that the new Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew is not coming with a V-8 mill.  Ford has announced that the SuperCrew will be powered by a 3.5 L, EcoBoost V-6 mill. The automaker went on to add that the new engine will be more powerful than the previous 6.2 L, V-8 which was good for 411 horses and 434 lb-ft of torque. The new engine could produce as much as 500 hp and over 450 lb-ft of torque which will see the monster run through wastelands as if it was on a racetrack. The engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission that channels power to all wheels.

The engine is complimented by a dual exhaust system, a beefed-up suspension and a Torsen differential for the front axle. Ford has also added the Ford’s Terrain Management System which adapts the vehicle to different terrain. This system changes the vehicle’s configurations for different terrains through six modes which are Normal, Street, Mud and Sand, Weather, Baja and Rock.

All these factors combine to make the Raptor retain its crown as the fastest factory-built truck ion off-road terrains.

Price and release date

Ford is yet to reveal the price of the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew and we will have to wait a bit longer for the automaker to reveal this information. However, Ford has confirmed that the model will be available in showrooms this fall.

The last SuperCrew had a starting price of $ 49,000. I believe the new model will be slightly expensive to reflect inflation and the slight improvements. A price of around $ 51,500 is likely.

Competition

While no factory-built model can rush through the desert quicker than the Raptor, the Ram Power Wagon beats it in low-speed crawling. The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is another well-equipped model that will give the Raptor a run for its money.
