2017 Ford Fusion Platinum

Over the last few years, the Ford Fusion lineup has gained huge popularity enabling the model to sell over 300,000 units for the last two consecutive years. However, despite this huge success, Ford felt there is a part of the market they hadn’t touched. The automaker felt that the existing range of Fusions were not sporty enough hence the decision to add a Fusion Sport which spits 325 horses. The model has also been refined to look the part. In addition, Ford also felt that the existing top-of-the-range Titanium trim was not exclusive enough to compete with top rivals in this mid-size sedan market.

This was the reason behind the automakers decision to add the all new Platinum trim to compete with models like the Lincoln MKZ.  The new model features upgraded technologies and more luxury features.  While the new Sport trim appeals to those buyers looking for more speed, the Platinum trim is for those looking for a classy and refined luxurious sedan for their daily hauling needs. Most of the upgrades that set the Platinum trim apart from its siblings are on the inside. Only a few exterior upgrades help differentiate it from lower Fusion trims.

The first upgrade is its unique grille which features a black mesh grille with a chrome finish. It also benefits from LED headlights, DRLs and taillights. On the roof, the Fusion Platinum gets a sunroof.  The vehicle also rides on 19-inch polished wheels as opposed to 18-inchers on the Titanium trim. These wheels are wrapped in 40-Series continental tires.

Other features of the standard Fusion remain. The model is offered in a White Gold exterior color though other colors are available.

Inside is where the Ford Fusion Platinum trim stands apart from the rest of the Fusion trims. The model features most of the excellent enhancements done on the lower trims. These features include redesigned cupholders, a rotary gear selector and better access to storage compartments below the center stack. In addition to these, the Platinum is equipped with premium features that are toe to toe with its main rival brands.

To start with, Ford has hooked up the Platinum trim with an upgraded Sync 3 infotainment system. This system comes with a voice activated navigation system.  As you would expect, the seats are wrapped in antiqued Cocoa leather with a lovely diamond-style contrast stitching. The seats are also heated and ventilated.  The steering wheel and dashboard are wrapped in padded Venetian leather.

The upper door panels are also wrapped in leather with lovely diamond-stitching patterns. The dash and door panels also feature real wood which make the model look even more premium.

Drivers will love the vehicle’s power tilting and telescoping steering wheel. The vehicle is also fitted with an acoustic glass on the windshield and front side windows that enhance the effects of the new 12-speaker Sony audio system even when you are rushing on the freeway at over 100 mph. In addition, Ford has equipped the model with a dual-stage climate control system that helps keep temperatures in the cabin ideal.

The model has been stretched wider meaning passengers, even the rear ones will have a better shoulder and hip room compared to other trims.

For improved safety, the Platinum trim features a pre-collision assist together with pedestrian detection, active park assist and an adaptive cruise control system with a Stop and Go feature among others.

Engine Specs and performance

The 2017 Ford Fusion Platinum is powered by a turbocharged 2.0 L, EcoBoost engine which is capable of producing 240 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. The vehicle will be offered in all-wheel-drive for a smooth riding experience.

According to reports, the automaker will also offer the Energi engine (a plug-in drive-train). This drive-train combines the 2.0 L, EcoBoost engine with a powerful electric motor. The motor is complimented by a lithium-ion battery pack which enables the model to go for 19 miles on electric power alone.  The drive-train has a combined range of 500 miles when the gasoline tank is full. The engine is fitted with software that determines the optimal time to recharge the battery and the recharge can take just 2.5 hours when using a fast charger

Competition

The new top-of-the-range Platinum trim takes the Fusion in a whole new level where it seeks to compete with the likes of Lincoln MKZ, Lexus ES and Buick LaCrosse. Though the above models are way too expensive than the Fusion, when it comes to the actual features, the gap is smaller than has ever been and upon this realization, price sensitive customers will without doubt turn to the Fusion Platinum.
